Organisers of the Sandown Sprint have today (15th January 2021) announced that the 2021 event has been postponed. Lockdown restrictions in England are unlikely to have eased sufficiently by March and the event will now be held in Spring 2022.
The Island Car Centre Sandown Sprint was due to be held over the weekend of 27th & 28th March 2021. A race permit from Motorsport UK had already been issued for this closed public road motor racing event, planned to take place on Culver Parade in Sandown.
Promoter Tim Addison of Solent commented: “Just a few weeks ago the Island was in Tier 1 and we were looking at green lights for the Sprint. The dramatic way in which circumstances have changed, leaves us with no option but to look again at new dates.”
Organisers of the Sandown Sprint, Solent and the Isle of Wight Car Club, looked at all options to run the event later this year, but for a number of reasons it was not viable. Malcolm Smith, Chairman, Isle of Wight Car Club added: “I’m sure our membership and the competitors who have entered will once again be supportive of the decision not to go ahead this year. It’s a great disappointment, but totally outside of our control.”
All tickets for the Sprint will remain valid. “Hopefully we will be in a position to announce the new 2022 dates shortly”, continued Tim. “We need to carry on our discussions with the event partners including the Isle of Wight Council, Sandown Town Council and Island Roads. Their support together with that of Sandown businesses and our sponsors has been fantastic.”
Further updates will be announced here soon.
